For best results the under-floor surface should be as plane as it can be. Installing Avaire tile over existing ceramic tile shouldn't be an issue but as soon as someone says it can be done then other issues that are questionable arise.

The depth of the grout lines and the wavy tile could pose some problems and I personally wouldn't consider a floor of that nature to be "plane".

You could however easily enough skim coat the floor using a flat steel trowel and some "modified thinset". You would want to skim diagonally so as not to get thumps and bumps in the thinset from the trowel dropping into the existing grout joints as you applied the thinset.

I would like to install Avaire tile over existing tile which is 9" x 9" so the old grout lines would be in different places than the new tile. Additionalls the old tile is not totally flat but has a wavy texture. Is there some way to determine if it is OK for direct installation or is their a product that should be used to level the surface.
Thanks for any advice you can give,

Barbara Carpenter

Installing Avaire tile over existing ceramic tile is fine.
make sure the floor is within tolerance and the additional height isn't an issue at the transitions.

The Avaire system is designed as a floor tile and installing it on walls isn't recomended.

Hi,

I understand this can be applied to HW, Concrete etc.. however there is no mention of existing ceramic tile. Is this possible given the floor is not to far out?

Also, this may be a silly question. However may it be installed on Bathroom walls ontop of existing tile?

Thanks,

Jason
