I have the sub floor, then a 1/4 inch underlayment, then the Avaire tile going on top of the underlayment. When I match the tile up to the carpet edge, the Avaire tile is a 1/4 inch higher than the carpeting. What type of transition strip do I need to install over the carpet and tile edge? I do believe it is ok to install the Avaire tile over the underlayment...correct?

A "T" type transition can bridge the height difference between the carpet and tile. They typically have a "bracket" that attaches to the floor, and a "T" piece that clicks into the bracket.

Most home centers or flooring stores carry a variety of transition pieces. Make sure they can accommodate the height difference and you'll be fine.

Yes, you can install Avaire tile over a hard, flat, and structurally sound underlayment.

Another option is shimming the carpet tackstrip up so the carpet is at the same height as the Avaire tile then just tuck the carpet the same as you would to any hardsurface floor.
