Tile over rough concrete floor
Author: Jay
Date: 8/31/2008 8:57 pm EDT I have a basement in a cabin with a rough concrete floor. Looking for something just to improve appearance a bit. Part is downhill. Is there enough flex in the avaire joints to handle some irregularies in leveling? I assume flexible grout will work to a point. Have individual vinyl tile down now and would lay avaire over it. Also, concrete floor was poured over a rock ledge so it sweats. Is that a problem? Thanks |

Date: 9/1/2008 11:08 am EDT While the polymer grid and flexible joints are designed to handle some degree of irregularities, the floor must be generally flat (1/4" in 10 feet). A slope is fine as long as it is level. However, if you have consistent moisture, I would not recommend covering it with Avaire. While the moisture won't harm the tile, there is a risk that mold/mildew can develop under the tile. Also, if there is consistent heavy moisture during installation, it will negatively impact the grout cure. |
