tile on a trap door

We are installing avaire tile in our Kitchen and laundry room and there is a trap door going down to our crawl space basement which we need to access. What would be the best way to install tiles over the trap door -- it will probably use about 9 tiles?

Modified thinset tile mortar.

Can I just put the thinset on the vinyl floor? Or do I have to prep the floor in another way?

I've had real good luck using a construction adhesive similar to PL-Premium.
