so let me understand i cant shim because flooring between hardwood floor and basement. i have couple board when steped on act loose and dead sound need to tighten up. also couple board that sunk as butted up to next board if more then what you said can i use wood putty or do i need to use thin set or what would work

Maybe I don't quite understand your description of shims. If your talking about placing a wood shim between the joist and the floor then that would be fine. You may also need the install some screws to secure any loose boards. Any low spots could be filled with a wood putty, but a better choice would be a portland based leveling compound available at any home center. It's easy to work with and less expensive than wood fillers if you a large area to fill.

yes that is what i mean but if can screw board and fill low spots that is all i need thanks
