Floor Mats

I read somewhere that putting a rubber backed floor mat down in the entryway will stain porcelain. Is this true? If so, what do I put on the floor to prevent scratching the tile from grit, etc. being brought in from outside?

I've never seen it stain porcelain tile, but It may cause damage on vinyl and wood floors. Having a walk-off mat at exterior doors is a great idea with any floor.
