Avaire technically can be adhered in place on vertical surfaces; however, we don't recommend this usage.
We've seen applications where people will use a Avaire tile cut in half for a matching baseboard/kickplate and have a single tile adhered to the wall. In this case the viscosity of the general purpose adhesive applied to the back of the tray appears to be sufficient to hold the single tile to the wall. However, if you have multiple tiles stacked on a vertical surface, I'd be concerned about the weigh of the tiles pulling away from the wall and causing issues.
Sorry, but a chair-rail height vertical application is not recommended.
