With a level subfloor, you should not need to install backerboard. It won't hurt, but it would add time and cost to the project. The rule-of-thumb is if the tile rocks when you place it on the floor, the floor is not sufficiently level. You can definitely install directly above a vinyl floor.

The prodcut is carried in select Home Depot stores in Canada, but not here in the US (yet).

Currently, in the US, only 12x12 tiles are available. Home Depot Canada does carry 6x6 tiles that are "modular" with the system, meaning they interlock with the 12's like "lego's" for perfect fit and alignment.
