Default Installation over carpet adhesive residue?

Author: JimE

I should replace the carpet in our basement with something more permanent and I am considering Avaire. The issue is that the carpet is stuck down to the concrete floor with some sort of adhesive (not mastic, its clear/white), and pulling up the carpet will leave some residue. This residue precludes the use of many other flooring systems without the massive effort to remove it. Would Avaire be able to be safely installed directly over the residue, or with some sort of underlayment.

Thanks

Extracted from e-mail ...

I pulled up a corner of the carpet and the adhesive, which is probably over the whole area, is just a little tacky to the touch and the combing ridges are around 1mm after being squashed by the carpet backing (low loop berber, possibly indoor-outdoor), none of the backing seems to stay on the floor. I don't think there will be a problem with sliding the tiles on it, but if need be probably a light dusting of chalk would eliminate the tack.

Thanks

I light dusting of chaulk would eliminate the stickyness temporarily.I would recommend using a(if over concrete) 4" razor scraper to remove the adhesive then if the floor is still tackey I would use a portland base patch to skimcoat.
please feel free to call me if you have any more questions
on this or any thing else. Thank you!

A quick answer "on the run" ... The main benefit Avaire has for me is that I should be able to rip up the old carpet in sections, "repair" any pet inflicted damage to the underlying concrete, install the tile and grout it without the area being totally isolated for more than a day or so (assuming the grout can be covered with cardboard or kraft paper) and still cure). I think that would be very difficult with scraping and thinsetting added to the flowchart :-(

I will be calling when this project gets nearer to the top of the priority list.
